The UNIC Pop-up CityLab "integration and cultural diversity", which focused on the issue of racism, brought representatives of the Ruhr University Bochum and the city of Bochum, as the two largest employers in Bochum, into exchange. The discussion was about how to deal with racism within both organizations (e.g. with accusations of racism from employees or applicants) but also accusations of racism from their "customers" i.e. students in the case of RUB, citizens in the case of the city. Likewise, the question of prevention of (systematic) racism in the organizations was addressed.

Pupils, students and participants in further education courses, such as those offered by the Adult Education Centre, regularly report in evaluations that they lack culturally sensitive content in e.g. in courses that can be used in everyday life or at work beyond the classroom. Although teachers as well as students and course participants are sensitised to the importance of a tolerant and open society, there are still not enough courses on diversity that are included in the curriculum as standard and compulsory. At the Ruhr-Universität, there is sufficient expertise, e.g. in the Diversity Think Tank, in various university groups such as the Amnesty Group and RUB Bekennt Farbe or in the newly created Prorectorate for Diversity, Inclusion and Talent Development, to adequately design and implement the content of the courses.
