Migration and Social Inclusion in post-industrial cities: Sharing challenges and best practices (Bilbao and Zagreb)

This virtual meeting platform aims to share challenges common to two cities of the UNIC alliance - Bilbao and Zagreb in terms of immigration and social inclusion, as well as to present practices with high impact in terms of inclusion of immigrant people and groups carried out in these cities by different governmental or social agents as part of an initial process of co-creation of innovative solutions to some of these challenges

This session will seek to:

Collect the main challenges previously identified in terms of immigration and social inclusion in the cities of Bilbao and Zagreb, highlighting those issues and those similar structural elements in the 3 contexts.
To present good practices in the field of social inclusion of immigrant groups and individuals in the 2 cities. Practices may be provided by the public sector (local administrations), the private sector (private companies or institutions), the third sector (associations or non-profit organizations) or the universities themselves.
To discuss the success factors, challenges and issues to be taken into account for the replicability of these practices in the different cities, considering the different contexts and challenges described in the first part of the session, as an initial part of a process of co-creation of solutions to be followed in the different cities led by the corresponding Universities.

During the VMP, shared challenges between the cities of Bilbao and Zagreb in terms of social inclusion of migrants and migrant groups were discussed. Despite the differences in the composition of these groups in the two cities (migrant profile) and the weight that these groups may have in each of them (numbers) in social, economic and cultural terms, similarities in the reception processes and in the use of certain institutional tools have been identified. In relation to the inspiring practices presented, a certain complementarity between them is understood. From Bilbao the practice focused on the reception of Ukrainian refugees presented a focus on the coverage of basic human rights (housing, food, health coverage) while the practice presented from Zagreb put the focus on a better understanding of the relationship of psychology and law (justice, justice, impunity) are support for victims and witnesses of war crimes.
