The UNIC Pop-up CityLab "integration and cultural diversity", which focused on the issue of racism, brought representatives of the Ruhr University Bochum and the city of Bochum, as the two largest employers in Bochum, into exchange. The discussion was about how to deal with racism within both organizations (e.g. with accusations of racism from employees or applicants) but also accusations of racism from their "customers" i.e. students in the case of RUB, citizens in the case of the city. Likewise, the question of prevention of (systematic) racism in the organizations was addressed.

The aim of institutions must be to ensure that their staff in positions with direct contact with customers develop an awareness of their needs. This is because racism-sensitized employees are more critical of power, more sensitive to discrimination, more inclusive, more target group-oriented and more aware of privileges than other employees. In order to communicate the necessary needs, spaces can be created in which awareness is generated for the concerns of e.g. people of colour. In addition, networks of allies should be created to advocate for the needs of others, e.g. by being aware of their own privileges and knowing how to use them for the sake of inclusivity. Employee awareness can also be raised through awareness training. One’s own offers should be reviewed in terms of the diversity of the target group for susceptibility to racism. This can be done, for example, by having experts in the field of culture, religion or migration go through the services and give feedback on them
