Preliminary results of the engaged research focusing on the elements of inclusion of Roma students in higher education were presented at the UNIC Annual Conference Reinventing Education, Regenerating Post-industrial Cities under the title How much do scholarships contribute to inclusion: perception of particularly underrepresented groups.
Oulu - Finland
Croatian Romani Union "KALI SARA"
Research demonstrated that scholarships contribute to greater involvement of Roma students, but a) that the amount is not enough for students who are not accommodated in the dormitory and for those who live in remote areas and have to travel and that b) they provide an opportunity for integration, but other measures are needed. As indicated by students themselves, in addition to scholarships, efforts should be made to raising awareness and reduction of negative/unfavorable reactions of the environment (stereotypes during studies, discrimination in employment), providing academic support (buddies, mentors, study groups) to facilitate their understanding of the content (understanding of professional/scientific language) and coping with the study (cultural differences) and providing psychosocial support (cultural adaptation, strengthening self-confidence, coping strategies with stress/negative reactions of the environment).
