During this event we explored the connection between food and migration with experts from the UNIC alliance, external stakeholders and the audience. The aim of this event was to dive deeper into different research projects and introduce two citizen initiatives from the University of Oulu, and University of Liege. Moreover, with this event we also aimed to connect different researchers and city stakeholders from the UNIC universities to explore this topic further.
Speakers:
The event was divided into two parts. First part was presentations from Elsa Mescoli, Roger Norum, Elodie Razy and Mélanie Vivier and their research on the connection between food and migration, followed by short introductions of two citizen initiatives: Zestii Kitchens and Le Monde des Possibles. Second part continued with a panel discussion hosted by Joffy Conolly where all speakers were invited to share their insights further.

Pespectives from UNIC Oulu panelists
Roger Norum, Associate Professor, Faculty of Humanities, University of Oulu, Finland shared his research on the role of food in migration practices and imaginaries and the role of migration in food cultures in the so called 'host' country. The presentation gave the example of food as expression of Nordicness and some key take-aways included:
• Most research linking migration with food is marginal and focuses largely on economic development.
• Migrant populations clearly have marked influence on local and global culinary cultures (Abbots 2016).
• “Privileged” migrants often wield economic, cultural and political capital to shape food markets and practices.
• Research can enhance understandings not just of connections between migration and food, but critical processes such as integration, superdiversity, xenophobia, and whiteness (e.g. Sverdljuk et al. 2021).
