Educational Equity in School Education - Hybrid-Hackathon in Bochum

Teachers are important in achieving and shaping educational equity. However, they often lack an understanding of the students' circumstances and problems. Teachers must learn more empathy, develop sensitivity for other life situations, and understand the importance of participation and recognition in everyday school life.

In May 2021, Bochum scientists, citizens and the city administration came together in a pop-up city lab to discuss the question: "How educationally appropriate is Bochum? In the process, a variety of challenges were identified across the different phases of education. In a 30-hour-hackathon-event, a total of 17 of these challenges were prepared and students, as well as other interested parties, were invited to develop initial ideas and concepts for overcoming these challenges.

Challenge: Teachers are important in achieving and shaping educational equity. However, they often lack an understanding of the students' circumstances and problems. Therefore, teacher training should also help to enable a change in thinking. In addition to specialized knowledge, teachers must learn more empathy, develop sensitivity for other life situations, and understand the importance of participation and recognition in everyday school life. More opportunities for this should be created as early as in their studies. What could this look like in practice? What concepts, courses, modules, practical projects or even impetus for structural changes could be offered and advanced?

Team with four students

Team School Education worked on a concept to improve the training of teachers by putting more emphasis on social inequalities in the curriculum and how to avoid them, in addition to regular content. The team assumed that inequality in school education by teachers is due on the one hand to a lack of understanding of the problems and circumstances of students and on the other hand to unintentional or unconscious discrimination against certain groups. Their approach is to conduct a regular survey of all students on the topic of educational equity or inequity. The problems identified in this way must be incorporated into teacher training and addressed there, as well as the way in which teachers act. In this way, it is possible to create an awareness of inequalities and to enable teachers to recognize them at an early stage and to take countermeasures.
