Research Colloquium for Master and Doctorate Students in Catholic Theology

A team of four teachers from Uni Zagreb and RUB have conceived a full block seminar on ‘Religion, Church and Theology in Times of Crisis – a Theological and Religious Pedagogical Research’. Actual research projects of Master’s and Doctorate’s thesis were presented and discussed against the background of pandemics, globalisation and political radicalisation in both countries in form of a virtual conference.

The involved teachers had several virtual meetings to prepare the course. They agreed on a topic of interest for both cohorts, a date for the course and a common approach to the setting.

The course was organised in form of a conference. Each student had 20 minutes to present the project, and 10 minutes for a reflection with the audience. At the end, a panel discussion with the consolidation of the topics and a placement in a larger context has been realised.

A result of this virtual collaboration is the publication of an anthology on the topic of ‘Religion in times of Crisis’.

The teachers are satisfied with their experience and plan to implement this course in the curricula of the different study programs. In addition to that, intense networking between the two research groups from Bochum and Zagreb can be observed, which has resulted in the planning of meetings on site.

Challenges: The teachers are currently working on how the course could be assessed, so that students might receive CPs.

Mentoring activities: The students were not familiar with international cooperation and needed support in the process of creating their presentation in English language and using PowerPoint. The involved teachers guided their students in preparation of their presentations.

Voice of teachers: The teachers describe that new perspectives to their research field have been opened up. New dimensions of theology have been raised, which is profitable for the education as well as for the research.

Voice of students: The course has been evaluated orally afterwards. Students report to have gained a new experience and were very happy about the occasion of having and giving international presentations, which is not very common in the field of theology yet. They wish to have a structural implementation of the course, so that they can get CPs for it.
