UNIC Roundtable: European vision for One Health implementation

The online UNIC roundtable was aimed at the members of UNIC's Thematic Line 6 "Health and Wellbeing", but also to anyone who was willing to discover the One Health initiative. This encounter provided a platform to cross-fertilize thinking and action in terms of One Health.

The virtual roundtable started by defining what "One Health" is using hexx.it software and came up with many concepts that explain what "One Health" means to participants: from interspecies justice, degrowth, connection to nature, participatory decision-making, integration, sustainability, the future, social sustainability, wholeness, creativity, systems, social connections and collaboration.

We then turned to the various speakers and their concepts:

◦ Teaching practice at the Faculty of Medicine (UZagreb)

◦ Endowment fund case for cancer screening with systemic modeling (Erasmus University)

◦ Cities, planetary limits and degrowth (ULodz)

◦ Course on infectious diseases in the Master of Public Health using the One Health approach (UCCork)

◦ Research on extended home visiting program within child health care centers (UMalmö)

◦ Health promotion to address health inequalities in disadvantaged groups and migrants using a participatory approach (UMalmö)

◦ Health promotion among adolescents in relation to substance abuse (UMalmö)

Questions were then asked to discover how each initiative was linked and designed to accommodate and integrate the One Health approach and collective and local action according to different perspectives.

And a physical encounter

The last day of the Rêve Général Festival ("General Dream") was entirely dedicated to the "One Health" concept. During the afternoon, the UNIC team from ULiège and the City of Liège hold a physical roundtable that focused on "What is the role of the city in a One Health policy, and how do we link up with the University?" It was also an opportunity for the team present to introduce the CityLabs methodology to those around the table.
