Workshop: Education for Sustainable Development in Practice

This workshop is part of UNIC InterTeach: intercultural and innovative teaching and learning – UNIC's professional development programme for university teachers under the theme ESD. The goal of the workshop is to explore the fundamental concepts of Education for Sustainable Development, exchange best-practices, and formulate a strategic action plan for integrating ESD principles into participants' teaching methodologies.

In the workshop you will meet university educators of partner-universities of the UNIC-Alliance, who are based in: Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

This workshop aims to provide educators with the knowledge to incorporate sustainable development into their pedagogical practices. Participants will explore the topic of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the essential competencies for sustainable development. Through collaborative activities and peer feedback, attendees will formulate actionable plans to integrate these concepts into their teaching methodologies.

The workshop will take place online via Zoom and be held in English (lingua franca).

Learning Outcomes 

After this workshop you will be able to:

• - Introduce the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and evaluate their relevance to education.
• - Identify and articulate the essential competencies required for effective Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
• - Describe and share examples for good practice of ESD in university teaching.
• - Engage in collaborative activities to create actionable plans for incorporating ESD into your curricula.

Procedure 

Asynchronous Preparation: Prior to the workshop, participants are required to introduce themselves on a Taskcards Board. This activity will facilitate the selection of peers for the feedback segment of the workshop. Additionally, participants are encouraged to reflect on and prepare best practices related to 'incorporating ESD into your curricula' to share during the workshop. Participants should allocate 30 min for the pre-tasks.

Synchronous Workshop: The second component is a 120-minute live workshop conducted via Zoom.

The workshop will not be recorded.

Short bio of the facilitator

Anca Teodosiu is a specialist at the University of Oulu's Unit of Strategy and Science Policy and has been the project coordinator for UNIC since September 2021, overseeing educational collaborations and innovations. She also contributes to the UNIC Teaching and Learning Center, supporting teacher development and collaboration.

Anna Hans is member of the project ESD@RUB which aims to support teachers and students with learning and teaching about Sustainable Development at Ruhr-University Bochum.
