Panel discussion and showcase of best practice Engaged Research from across Europe - research partners share their practice insights.

The UNIC European University is involving and engaging with citizens, civil society and public/city partners in research and innovation. This online event takes a deep dive into four best practice cases of engaged research from across the UNIC Alliance. It asks what are the knowledge and empowerment processes needed to address the challenges of post-industrial cities? How do we fundamentally re-evaluate what we do as universities and cities, to work not only for society but also with and within society?

Chairing the event Professor Peter Scholten, Alliance Coordinator of the European University of Post-Industrial Cities (UNIC), Erasmus University Rotterdam will welcome the following presenters in this first of a series of seminars on Learning from Engaged Research Best Practice from the UNIC Engaged Research Strategy Forum:


Dr Catherine Elsen, University of Liege: InterAct Research Lab

‘Ageing well in post-industrial territories’

Led by a multidisciplinary team, this engaged research exemplar, uses Design Methods to address the issue of ageing well in Liege, with a focus on housing, anticipation of aging well and perception of older people in society. The presentation will ask what does it mean to age well in a city with a rich industrial past? How do the histories of each individual link together and reflect on today's realities?

‘Mobile Futures: Diversity, Trust, and Two-Way Integration’

Mobile Futures is an interdisciplinary, action-oriented engaged research exemplar that seeks to make a scientific and societal contribution to co-creating a fair and inclusive Finnish society. To achieve this goal, the project employs the Living Lab methodology, through which solutions are jointly developed by the project researchers and societal partners.

‘New habitats for human development ‘

This presentation will discuss the 360º Cities Model and the KAIA Method (learning, research & action) pioneered by Deusto Cities Lab. It offer a vision of an urban model that is based on the creativity of everyone, and that is interrelated with other dimensions (competitiveness, cohesion and compactness) to form a collaborative city.

‘Microbiome Study of Irish Travellers’

This presentation asks: “what is a normal or desirable microbiome in an ethnically diverse society?” This Public Patient Involvement (PPI) engaged research exemplar represents the shared efforts of clinicians and scientists working in partnership with the insight, wisdom and input of Cork Travellers who not only participated in the study but also shaped its design and planning. The findings have global implications and are published in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine.
